The Jatav community is a prominent social group in North India with a long history of reform, education and struggle for equality.

Jatav History

The Jatav community is a significant and historically rich group found mainly in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Madhya Pradesh. They are traditionally identified as a sub-caste within the broader Dalit community, often associated with leather work. Their history is deeply tied to India's struggle against caste-based discrimination and for social justice.

It is a story of resilience, resistance and empowerment: origins, historical oppression, social progress, economic challenges and political representation.

Like many Scheduled Caste communities, they were barred from education, temple access and public life, and pushed into work society called impure.
